Company Founder – Arie Van Dam

Van Dam Plumbing Ltd
Arie Van Dam

Arie Van Dam immigrated to New Zealand from Holland in 1951. On his arrival he was employed in the heavy engineering field in New Plymouth as he had worked in the ship building industry before leaving Holland. Arie and future wife, Klara emigrated together from Holland, married in New Plymouth, New Zealand and had 5 children.

The driving force to leave his family and friends in Holland was to make a new start in a new country and to own his own business. He found a job as a plumbing labourer in Matamata which started him in the trade. He went on to complete an adult apprenticeship which required him to work under a plumber for 7 years he became qualified in early 1960. In 1961 he started his business with a bike and a shovel.

Training was important to Arie and he trained a number of apprentices including both his sons Steven and Martin in plumbing and daughter Linda in an administration roll.

He was an active member of the Putaruru Lions Club for over 40 years. He also was involved in the St John Ambulance Association. He was involved, later on, in the local budgeting service for around 20 years and helped a number of families. He enjoyed a long retirement in his garden and fishing until he passed away in 2006.
